Deferred
Death benefits

I left on or before 31 March 2008

Death grants

For deferred members who left before 1 April 2008, the death grant if they die whilst still a deferred member is their deferred lump sum, including cost of living increases from the date of leaving to date of death.

However the death grant that is payable may be affected if you have active membership elsewhere in the Local Government Pension Scheme. Please contact us for further information about this.

Choosing who receives the death grant

You can choose who should receive any death grant by filling in death grant 'expression of wish' form. If you have not filled in a death grant nomination form and would like to do so, please contact us. If you do this, we can pay any money due quickly, and inheritance tax will not be taken from the death grant.

What will my dependants get if I die?

When you die, your husband, wife, civil partner, or next of kin must tell us immediately. (A civil partner is someone who has entered into a formal arrangement, known as a civil partnership, with a same sex partner).

I left on or after 1 April 2008

Death grants

If you’re a deferred member who left after 31 March 2008 and you die while you’re still a deferred member, we will pay a death grant of 5 times your deferred annual pension.

However the death grant that is payable may be affected if you have active membership elsewhere in the Local Government Pension Scheme. Please contact us for further information about this.

Who gets the money?

You can tell us who you would like us to pay the money to by nominating one or more people or organisations on a death grant nomination form.

If you haven't nominated anyone yet, why not do it now? Just download the form, fill it in, sign it and send it to us.

What will my dependants get if I die?

If you die, your husband, wife, civil partner, co-habiting partner or next of kin must tell us immediately.
