Ill-health retirement

If your health fails and you are judged to be unable to carry out the duties of your job because of permanent ill health you will get your benefits.

How much your benefits are will depend on whether and how quickly you can return to work.

Tier 1 - If you can't return to gainful employment* before age 65:

You'll get a pension worked out on the full membership you would have if you'd stayed in the scheme until your 65th birthday.

* Gainful employment means paid employment of not less than 30 hours a week for at least a year.

Tier 2 - If you're able to return to gainful employment* before age 65:

You'll get a pension worked out on your actual membership plus 25% of the membership you would've built up, from the date you retired up to age 65.

Tier 3 - If you're able to return to gainful employment* quickly:

You'll get a pension based on your scheme membership only. You will only get this while you're out of work and when you start gainful employment again the pension will stop. Your employer will arrange for your case to be reviewed 18 months after retiring on this benefit. The review could mean the pension will stop. This benefit will be paid for a maximum of three years then will stop.
