Ill-health retirement changes

Under the new scheme, if your health fails and you are judged to be unable to carry out the duties of your job because of permanent ill health you will get your benefits.

How much your benefits are will depend on whether and how quickly you can return to work.

If you're able to return to gainful employment
* quickly:

You'll get a pension based on your scheme membership only. It's likely you'd only get this while you're out of work, and when you start gainful employment again, the pension will usually stop.

* Gainful employment means paid employment of not less than 30 hours a week for at least a year.

If you’re able to return to work before age 65:

You'll get a pension worked out on your actual membership plus 25% of the membership you would've built up, from the date you retired up to age 65.

If you can't return to work before age 65:

You'll get a pension worked out on the full membership you would have if you'd stayed in the scheme until your 65th birthday.

The new proposals suggest that enhancements for ill-health retirement in the new-look scheme will be no less than in the current scheme.
