In the last issue of For Your Benefit we told you of our plans to hold WYPF's first Annual Meeting. We also asked you to tell us where you would like the meeting to be held by sending a return card. Thank you to everyone who did.
By far the biggest vote was for Leeds.
So, our first Annual Meeting for members, deferred members and pensioners will be at 10.30am on 1st November 2001 at Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds.
The meeting will be chaired by Councillor Robert Sowman and will start with short presentations on:
After the presentations you will have the chance to put your questions about your pension scheme to WYPF's senior management team.
Entry to the meeting will be strictly by ticket only.
To apply for a ticket, please phone 01274 752542 [line now closed].
Please have your Pension Information 2001 statement with you when you phone. You will need to tell us your member number which is printed on this form. One ticket only will be issued per member and tickets will be issued on a first-come first-served basis. Please tell us if you have any special needs.
We hope our first Annual Meeting will be very successful.
Now Concurrent Personal Pensions
Ever since Personal Pensions were introduced back in 1988 the message has been clear. You could either be in an occupational pension scheme, like the LGPS, or you could have a personal pension. But you couldn't have both.
But now you can!
Along with the introduction of concurrent Stakeholder Pensions, covered in the last issue of For Your Benefit, the notion of concurrent personal pensions was also introduced for personal pensions set up under the New Tax Regime.
You can get more information about this from personal pension providers.
Tribunal still awaited
The Nottingham Employment Tribunal will shortly hear two test cases which will hopefully end uncertainty for workers who were kept out of the LGPS because they worked part time.
Once the hearing has taken place, the way should be clear for the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) to make the changes needed to the scheme.
At the time of writing, the date of the hearing was not known, but as soon as we get more information, well let you know.
In the meantime, if you have left recently, or you will be leaving soon, the Local Government Pension Committee of the Employers' Organization suggests that you lodge a claim with the Employment Tribunal.
You can get an Employment Tribunal claim form from your local Department of Employment Office. We're sorry but we won't be able to give you a claim form. You must lodge your claim within 6 months of leaving.
